What's In A Logo?

Coming up with the logo for our business was an important but daunting task.

As a visual person, I knew having something that felt unique and personal was going to be extremely important for Suki Shima. We would be using it everywhere: our website, social accounts, business cards, shop swag (can't wait to make these!!) It needed to be simple but striking to represent the brand and our vibe.

The one reference that stuck out to me from the beginning was the Japanese flag. 🇯🇵

It's officially called Nisshōki (日章旗, the "flag of sun"), but is more commonly known in Japan as Hinomaru (日の丸, the "circle of the sun"). [Thanks Wikipedia!Being Japanese has been a big part of my identity since childhood. When I started doodling ideas for the logo, I kept being drawn to using a simple circle. It just...felt right.

After lots of research, I was able to find a great freelance artist on Fiverr. He was extremely professional and really listened to all the ideas and feedback I had, making him easy to collaborate with. We were able to come up with the designs you see today, and we couldn't be happier with it!
